The switch to copper-coated zinc Lincoln Cents was supposed
to be complete in 1982. The 1983 cents were to weigh 2.5 grams instead of 3.1
grams. However, Numismatic News reports:
Jeff Young of Ohio appears to be the latest collector to find a heretofore unknown Transitional Error on a Lincoln cent worth $15,000. After years of searching, he is the first to report to Numismatic News an example of a 1983-D cent struck on a pre-1982 (or early 1982) homogeneous 95-percent copper alloy planchet, or what most folks just call a “copper planchet.”
The key here might be “after years of searching.” Ironically
there are tons of pre-1982 copper cents being hoarded while 1983 cents are
being tossed aside. Nobody knows how many are out there so if you’ve got the
time, 1983 cents, and a coin scale accurate to 0.1 grams, start searching.
I think I have a 1983 copper planchet
ReplyDeleteI found a 1983-December copper planchet coin

ReplyDeleteIf I understand you correctly, if the 1983D penny is .01 grams would be the rare one and its worth a lot of money?
ReplyDeleteWeigh it...if it weighs 2.5 grams...it's no good. Because of the copper being heavier... The copper 1983d pennies weigh 3.1 grams..good luck hunting!
DeleteYou have a 99.99% chance of having a valuable penny
DeleteI don't think I would say 1983 d weighting 2.5 are not valuable because I have one with what looks like a five between the In God plus it has the small 8 that look really wired like they put a 8 on top of a 9 or something
DeleteI have a 1983 penny i thought it was a d, but the more i look it looks like a P. or maybe part of the "D" didnt print.
ReplyDeleteIt's an real reddish/ orange copper color. Can u tell me what to look for please? I also have a 1987D lincoln penny that is silver in color. Not sure if its steel, silver or what!
I would appreciate any help you can offer.
Thanks, Misti Cheeks

ReplyDeleteI think I found the rare 1983 d cent and its .01 on the scale and its shape like a nickel
ReplyDeleteHuh?? It's not .01....that's the scale you need. The junk pennies weigh 2.5 grams...the error pennies will weigh 3.1 grams..there's less than 100 or so known, so the chances that every person that has commented does not have the error..but worth a check. The writer of this page should have explained himself better...he's got alot of people very confused.

ReplyDeleteI am not a collector but my great uncle was. I have been trying to add on to his collection recently and while trying to fill the 1975- 1985 D Lincoln cent book, I have come across a penny without a premade space. I have two different 1983 Lincoln pennies with no marks. One has a seemingly larger Lincoln than the other. Any ideas? Thank you on advance.
